Words fail me at this. There is a fear that other companies could now follow suit, though there's no evidence to support that.

Mods have been so crucial to me in all the GTA series, it's sad to see them go like this.

The thing is, I watched TotalBiscuit's video on this a couple of days ago, and he's 100% right. I think this all comes down to modding threatening the bottom line. They want to strangle single player outright and force you online and into Shark Card-land. OpenIV operates on single player only, disabling your access to GTA Online, so I don't see how it can be used to hack online at all. Oddly enough this comes mere days before the OpenIV team proved their newest version's capabilities by porting Liberty City over from GTA IV.

The big kicker is that OpenIV's creators have forced an update that disables OpenIV if you have it installed. That's completely the wrong thing to do, and I'm just waiting for somebody to hack the code of OpenIV and disable the auto-update code.

^That is gold. I totally agree.

Wow, I didn't know that.
I have to admit that I did not follow too much all this drama, but I thought that it was R* that patched the game to make OpenIV useless!

Yup. I was really looking forward to purchasing Red Dead 2 when it comes out, but that's not gonna happen until they reverse their decision. Oh well.

According to Kotaku Take Two claims it's to lock down online cheating as they also shut down several other tools that can/are used for cheating.

Which is rubbish - like I said OpenIV locks out access to GTA Online when it's used, so it can't be used to cheat online. I personally think it is to do with big mods - like the now-cancelled Liberty City in GTA V mod - and Take Two and Rockstar don't want that impeding their sales of online Shark Cards. TotalBiscuit did a video on it and I completely agree with his comments there.

I'm glad they've come to an agreement over this. Here's hoping they'll now finish the Liberty City in GTAV mod.
