Texture Resources
Just thought I'd post this here, people can add on to this list, but here are some free, high-quality textures I've found while digging through the internet.
Some really good free textures:
http://www.cgtextures.com/
THE best texture resource site. Absolute best, recommended by most CG artists I've encountered.
High quality, largest selection available, and easy-to-use interface makes this the spotlight.
http://www.ozone3d.net/media/textures_2 ... /index.php
High Quality, 1024x1024 textures, although a bit limited in selection, the ones that are there are some of the best you'll find.
Just fyi, you'll have to register on the forums
http://www.michalkotek.com/download.html
You'll have to enable popups for this site.
HUGE textures, samples are at 1429x1480, really awesome stuff
http://archivetextures.net/
Very large selection, there's a filter at the top so you can switch between categories of metal, natural elements, architectural, anything you'd like.
Sizes are generally not as huge as the above texture packs, but they are certainly good enough, averaging around 512x512

Texturing Tutorials and Sources
I was thinking that it might be a good idea if we went ahead and made a large collection of sites which had good textures and tutorials, to help people on this site. Go ahead and post a link to any texturing sites you use or know of.
I have a few which I've just used, which are made for photoshop, but which will probably work with GIMP:
Seamless Wooden Planks
My Attempt:
Seamless Metal Surface
My Attempt:
And a really good site for textures is CG Textures

CGTextures is definitely the best, but I've heard ImageAfter is pretty good, too.

Re: Texture Resources
Hmm. Looks like a good quality texture Rogue, but I'm having trouble getting it to work, in specific, getting the dodge/burn tool to work out. Its hard to make it totally even and straight. have you got any tips?

Re: Texture Resources
Shift+click makes a straight line in GIMP, and i think its the same in photoshop. Personally, i think it looks better the way it is. 's more of a dented/worn look.

Re: Texture Resources
Just found an awesome tutorial which outlines the creation of a seamless detailed stone wall and normal map to go with it. It's useful for learning how to achieve certain effects; even if you don't want to make a stone wall, it's a useful tutorial to look at. While it is for photoshop, the same basic principles apply for most image editing applications.lucasfart wrote:Just searching around and found a couple more handy looking tuts (For Gimp):lucasfart wrote:Ah ok. Thanks for that Knightfire. Feel free to post your own stuff on here guys.
EDIT: Just found a whole tonne of seamless textures at ShareCG. The only downside is you need a account (free) to download them all.
This guy, in particular, has released over 2000 free high res seamless textures.
EDIT2: Just found a good site for blueprints of Star Wars and Halo stuff. It's worth a look at if you plan to model a weapon.....
Blast Builders Club
EDIT3: Another awesome site called filter forge has thousands of free, high-res textures which are totally seamless. Definitely worth a look at.
Filter Forge
Amazing Planet's (For Your Sky )
Basic Wood, Stone or Fossil Textures
Making Realistic Cloth Banners
A GREAT Simple Stone Texture (Good for Jagged Surfaces in Particular ie. Cliff Faces, Caves etc)
Making Ripped And Torn Fabric
Most of these textures are done from scratch, but are still quite simple, and a great way to learn how to make textures.
If you have any great tutorials that you use, feel free to add them to the list here so that we can all benefit from them.

Re: Texture Resources
I've been using the things shown in this one in all my stuff but it takes that extra personal touch to really make it pop. That base texture was even used for the Slave 1. If it's something like the hull of a ship it's best to do like that tut is showing and draw your own paneling rather than use a texture with random panels already made.AceMastermind wrote: Simple texturing of a ship tutorial (Photoshop?)

Re: Good places for sky images
For land maps, I always edit sky textures from CGSkies.com, it's really the only source of skies you need. They have over 350 panoramic images of Earth's sky, in categories based onc type of cloud cover and time of day. To use the full 3000-some pixel dimensioned sky, you have to purchase it, but the free sample with a little bit of editing works just fine for Battlefront 2.

Re: Good places for sky images
You can find great sky textures all day with Google searches, but if you want to make your own (like Sky_216 did) you can use Terragen or make space textures with Spacescape.
It might be best to just merge this with the Texture Resources thread here:
