BF2 Doesn't Play GCW after installing Conversion Pack 2.0

Postby DesertFoxNight » Fri Feb 25, 2011 4:57 pm

I recently purchased Battlefront 2 last Monday and installed it on my PC that's running Vista 32-bit. After I finished installing BF2, I then installed BFX v1.0 and the full version of the unofficial patch v1.3. I was able to play GCW with no problems so I then downloaded the Conversion Pack 2.0 and its patch. I manually installed the Conversion Pack 2.0 along with the patch, but I first deleted my side folder and used a backup that I made before installing BFX v1.0. So then I launch BF2 and I discovered that I couldn't play GCW anymore and ended up uninstalling and reinstalling BF2 more than 5 times because every time BF2 closed out when I tried to play GCW. I manually deleted the Lucasarts folder in my Programs Files folder and finally I decided to install BF2 to a new folder in my Program Files which resolved the problem and I was once again able to play GCW.

I'm certain that it was the conversion pack because after I was able to play GCW after installing BF2 to a new folder, then installing BFX v2.0, the unofficial patch v1.3, and finally BFX v1.0 in that order. After I know what caused this problem, I'm not going to reinstall the Conversion Pack 2.0 again.

You can't have both BFX and the Convo Pack installed at the same time if I remember right. It goes over 500 addon "missions", which will cause some crashes.

That's strange, cause I've been able to have both BFX and the Convo pack installed at once. With no crashing and I didn't get any message saying too many mission. So I guess you remember wrong.

After I know what caused this problem, I'm not going to reinstall the Conversion Pack 2.0 again.

You caused the problem. Not to be too tremendously hostile, but you're getting awful frustrated for someone who didn't follow install instructions.
I then installed BFX v1.0 and the full version of the unofficial patch v1.3.

then installing BFX v2.0, the unofficial patch v1.3, and finally BFX v1.0 in that order.

The 1.0 version of BFX is a sides mod, which means that it replaces the stock sides of the game. It should be ignored at this point in favor of BFX 2.0 simply because it may break compatibility with any number of other mods that reference stock sides.
but I first deleted my side folder and used a backup that I made before installing BFX v1.0.

Your problem likely started when you started mixing-and-matching files at different levels of installation.

The key is this here, taken from the Conversion Pack's "help" documentation:
I have a problem not mentioned above!
If there is any problem you find undocumented above, we recommend that you try a fresh install. To avoid any possible problem – reinstall Star Wars Battlefront II, patch to version 1.1, and then install the Conversion Pack. Depending on what you want to do, it is very likely that you can be helped to install things in the correct order to get everything you want, but it is very important to ask for help if you are not already familiar with what you want. It is disappointing to me that you have so quickly written off a great mod because, in your eagerness to get a whole bunch of stuff installed, you did not ask for help at the right place when things started going wonky.

If you are trying to get a specific set of features working, the easiest thing to do will be to simply ask "how can I get X?" We'll be happy to help you out.

Yeah, I was frustrated at first when I couldn't play GCW after uninstalling BF2 that multiple times, but the instructions are the ones that I have been following every time I had installed the Conversion Pack v1.9 on BF2 and also BFX on my previous copy of BF2 before I gave it away some years ago.

Ok, I've downloaded the Conversion Pack v2.0 again and extracted the files to my Desktop. I found that the only files that get overridden if I install the Conversion Pack v2.0 first then BFX v1.0 is alt.lvl from the side folder. The other files that are replaced are cisig.lvl, repshadow.lvl, repgree.lvl, and repatrtdrv.lvl which are also used by BFX v2.2. So the only file that would cause a problem would be the replacement of alt.lvl.

No, I didn't mix and match different files at different levels, I installed each mod completely before going to the next one. I've done it with the Conversion Pack 1.9 multiple times with no problem, but I think the problem was when I replace alt.lvl of the Conversion Pack v2.0 because the Conversion Pack v1.9 doesn't have an alt.lvl file.

The best thing to do is to ignore the instructions for an outdated version of the Conversion Pack and only follow those instructions that come with the version of the mod you are using. It sounds like you want to be able to play both BFX and the Conversion Pack, which is completely doable. Here is the best way to install both of those:

1) Start with a fresh install of original game
2) Install the stock game's 1.1 patch
3) Install the Conversion Pack 2.0 (this should happen first, because it installs an outdated version of the 1.3 patch)
4) Install the Conversion Pack's 2.2 patch (this should happen next, because it updates the 1.3 patch automatically, which you will use for BFX anyway)
5) Install BFX's newest version - ignore 1.0; if you're installing its newest version, not only is it redundant, but it may break compatibility with the Conversion Pack (because it modifies stock sides, which are used by the Conversion Pack)

Now you can install the Conversion Pack manually after other mods, but what you should be doing is completely patching the Conversion Pack in some other directory (i.e. your desktop, as you allude to). I wouldn't recommend this, though, because it adds files in a number of directories, and unless you are familiar with what each file does and which versions should be being used, you may end up with inconsistencies that cause issues as you mention above.
