I'll be on the lookout for this rare, once-in-a-lifetime event for sure, not directly, of course. 8)

Transit of Venus

Post by [TFA]Padawan_Fighter »

Very soon, Venus will transit in front of the sun for the last time in our lifetime (Or this century, if medical advances increase). It will be visible over the Western Hemisphere at 4:09 PM Central Time (US) June 5, and near the Eastern Hemisphere, 4:49 AM GMT on June 6.

You can view the stream here: http://venustransit.nasa.gov/transitofvenus/

If you are planning on viewing this yourself, please use proper protection*.
Hidden/Spoiler:
*Only #14 welder's goggles, glasses designed specifically for looking at the sun, telescope lenses designed for looking at the sun for long periods of time, or pinhole projectors will suffice.

To make a pinhole projector, get a piece of thin cardboard (like from a cereal box), cut a 2 inch rectangular hole in the center, replace the hole with aluminum foil, and poke a tiny hole in the center. Project the hole onto a piece of paper, or something white. The farther you hold it away, the clearer the image.

I don't want none'y'all gettin' hurt :)

Huh. It's been raining and cloudy over here, so I really hope it clears up before the transit. :(

Hopefully it's more impressive than it sounds/looks, because while it may be unique/once in a lifetime, is it really gonna be that great?

Sure, it is great! It's your opportunity to see first hand for yourself at how miniscule human beings are in this vast cosmos by simply viewing our neighboring planet. :D
