End of SWBFII Multiplayer
http://www.poweredbygamespy.com/pricing/
Is this the end? There has been a lot of talk recently, and I fear that the inevitable has arrived.
No Mas Multiplayer para SWBFII
(that was my bad spanish saying no more BFII multiplayer)
It is highly doubtful that lucasarts will begin proving their own MP support. Thoughts? Questions? Opinions?

Oh boy... They're pissing off hundreds of thousands of gamers by doing this. Bye, SWBF2... Bye, Halo CE... Bye, FSX... Bye, etc... *sigh* Idiots...

Re: End of SWBFII Multiplayer
While I'm upset with the news, all those games you listed are close to 10 years old... The communities probably aren't that big. I wouldn't call them "idiots"... It's probably economically necessary for them to turn off the servers and services that aren't getting much attention.
That being said, we should probably contact LucasArts/Disney... See if anything is being done/can be done.

Actually, Halo CE has a massive online community to this very day, believe it or not. The online lobby is always buzzing like crazy. Also, FSX had a pretty massive following as well. Tons of people were pissed when its servers were shut down.

Well, you can still mod - you just can't do anything online without the use of something like GameRanger. http://www.gameranger.com/

Re: End of SWBFII Multiplayer
Now is not the time to weep/run around in circles/complain about our current circumstances.
We need to kick into gear and come up with a backup plan.
Shutting down Gamespy's servers will not end BF2 multiplayer completely. It's still possible to direct connect to an IP. The only hurdle is we actually have to set -that- up.
Existing server owners need to be notified. If we can come up with a system of sorts that allows players to connect to a private network of servers, we could very well save Battlefront II's multiplayer.
Off-topic: MileHighGuy! You're alive! I haven't seen you in forever.

The problem is getting that around to the entire community. In less than 60 days.

Re: End of SWBFII Multiplayer
The SWBF (1) community went through this more than a year ago, but without warning. There are some alternatives. You can play using a virtual LAN (VLAN) solution. Most of us left on SWBF use tunngle. It is free, and supports a lot of older games. There are other VLAN solutions.
There is also OpenSpy, which tries to recreate the GS masterserver. Source code is available for this, but it seems to have a few bugs. We have tried this and it sort of works. Sleepkiller has some experience compiling the source code for this.
As you have already mentioned, the key will be getting your community informed of the transition. My advice, if you want it, is to try not to become fragmented with several options, but instead stick with one option no matter what.

Re: End of SWBFII Multiplayer
I think tungle is our best chance. Do we know if, say SWGO was using a different internet to lan system, and our clan used tungle, could we interact?

GameRanger seems to be a suitable alternative as well. I'm not sure if it runs on LAN like Tuungle.

Yep, pretty much... Coldly murdering the living hearts of many still-massively-played games... *sigh*

It's not so much murder so much as collapse.
Gamespy was the Atlas holding up the multiplayer servers. It's closed curtains and with it, the servers will shortly come crumbling down.
If you want to point a finger at someone, point it at these guys.

Re: End of SWBFII Multiplayer
What we learned from SWBF with regard to Gameranger is that it is fine if you are hosting from the game's graphical interface, but we were unable to use dedicated server software with Gameranger.
This ruled out the possibility of using Gameranger on our rented, dedicated servers. Tunngle, however, worked just fine for this purpose by installing it on the server then running the dedicated server software in LAN mode.
I suspect you will encounter the same issue with SWBF2.
