Today I bring forth to you all...


SOL - MARS: GERYON MONTES

This is a continuation to a rather large map pack whose maps will be, have been, and are being released one by one and are being created by myself, AQT, and THEWULFMAN. As most of you probably already know, MARS, one of Sol's few terrestrial planets, has been studied by astronomers for quite a large number of years, and the human race has been coveting to exploit the planet's habitation possibilities ever since the first successful flyby of Mars by Mariner 4 in 1965 when liquid water was speculated to be present upon the planet's surface. This particular map is my own rendition of how a militarized research establishment would be set near the base of the Geryon Montes mountain range.

As with every other map in the Sol Map Pack, this map's music is replaced by eerie, ambient soundscapes. Image

Modes:
- Team Deathmatch
- 1-flag CTF
- 2-flag CTF

Team Deathmatch is a bit different in this map; each team has one invisible command post (unable to be selected or be seen on the minimap) with a spawn path that has many spawn nodes throughout their "side" of the map. This is similar to the way other games such as Call of Duty or Counter-Strike have their team deathmatch modes set up.

This is probably the best looking map out of everything I've seen from the mappack so far. One suggestion, it might be a good idea to add some stone foliage layers, at least around the outskirts of the base.

Looks great! I agree with Eggman with the stone bit, but I think the map looks pretty cool.

I love a desert facility map as much as the next guy, but I'd suggest "busying up" the ground in between the buildings. Maybe a slightly different color from pebbles? Also, the green-colored walls look a bit too thin. Finally, I'd suggest changing the texture of that cover prop using what appears to be Mos Eisley textures; it seems out-of-place to me. Looking forward to the release!

I've got some ground rocks set now as foliage, screenshots will soon follow. As for the concrete barrier prop which I specifically modeled a few months ago for my Mount Rainier map which nobody is supposed to know about yet, that uses a hi-res concrete texture, not Mos Eisley, but yes, it will get a new color scheme.

I may be off base here, but if you're trying to give it a 'compound' feel, it might look good if there were some walls around the area, and a gate or two. I know that'd be a huge undertaking, especially at this stage in the map, so you can tell me if it's stupid, but I definitely think it'd only add to what is already a great looking map. :thumbs:

Suggestion: You could make a spaceship prop to use on this map,it would add to the immersion .

I agree. I fell in love with the floating weird things in AQT's Venus. A spaceship or mars Rover would be a nice touch.

I am touched. :cry: It's supposed to be a doppler radar, by the way. :wink:

Anyway, I had suggested to Marth about including a memorial to the late astronomer Carl Sagan somewhere in the map, similar to the following:

The map design looks nice enough, but boy oh boy, ditch Eddie's props there. They're especially out-of-place for this map (texture-wise), and the UVs on a number of them look pretty bad, regardless.

Not sure if this is what Mav mentioned, but what's that prop on the far left in the 2nd picture? The textures look very off.

It's like a sort of house...thing. I plan on importing it into Softimage, redoing the UVs and re-exporting. Same with many other props. They're also going to almost all get new textures.
